What a 1999 Jeep Taught Me About Fixing Small Businesses

I taught myself to drive stick on the way home, rebuilt the engine in my dad's driveway, and parked with a block of wood for a brake. That Jeep is exactly why BoostBC exists — and why your business's 'later' pile is costing you clients.

What a 1999 Jeep Taught Me About Fixing Small Businesses

I once bought a 1999 Jeep and taught myself to drive a five-speed on the way home.

Was that the ideal time to learn? No.

Did I stall at several intersections while complete strangers watched? Absolutely.

Not long after, I rebuilt the engine in my dad's driveway — with no formal training and a concerning amount of confidence. The emergency brake didn't work either, so I carried a block of wood and wedged it behind the tire whenever I parked.

It wasn't broken. It was just… manually secured. 😂

Eventually, I fixed that too.

What a $3,000 Jeep Taught Me About Running a Business

That Jeep taught me something about myself: when something isn't working, I need to know why — and apparently, I'm willing to make my life dramatically harder until I figure it out.

That same curiosity followed me into IT, marketing, communications, sales, web development, and project management. Every job I took, I ended up being the person who got handed the problems nobody else wanted to open the hood on.

Eventually, I combined everything I'd learned and created BoostBC — a one-person marketing and tech shop based right here in Kelowna, built for small businesses across the Okanagan and BC.

The Things Small Businesses Have Been Avoiding

Today, I help small businesses fix the things they've been quietly stepping around for years:

  • 😬 The website last updated in 2017 — it loads slowly, looks broken on phones, and nobody remembers the login.
  • 👻 The social media account nobody has posted on since Christmas — which one? Doesn't matter. Pick one.
  • 📉 The Google Ads quietly eating the marketing budget — running on autopilot, targeting who-knows-what, producing a report nobody reads.
  • 💻 The technology everyone is afraid to touch — because "Gary set it up" and Gary left three years ago.

Sound familiar? These aren't rare problems. Almost every small business in Kelowna, Vernon, Penticton — anywhere in BC, honestly — has at least one of these sitting in a drawer marked "later."

Why "Later" Is Costing You Clients Right Now

Here's the uncomfortable part: your customers can see the stuff you've been avoiding.

An outdated website tells people you might not be in business anymore. A dead social account makes them wonder if you're still taking customers. Ads that target the wrong people don't just waste money — they send your best leads straight to a competitor with a working contact form.

Most small-business problems don't require more buzzwords. They don't require a "full-funnel omnichannel growth strategy." They require someone willing to open the hood, figure out what isn't working, and actually fix it.

Thankfully, that's kind of my thing.

How BoostBC Works (No Mystery Packages)

BoostBC brings marketing and technology together without the confusing jargon, overpriced mystery packages, or meetings that should have been emails.

  • Build — project work with a flat quote: websites, branding, custom software, ad cleanups. You know the price before I start.
  • Boost — an ongoing monthly partnership where I act as your marketing and tech department, at a fraction of the cost of hiring one.

Everything is explained in plain English, every invoice makes sense, and if something is a bad idea for your business, I'll tell you — even if it means less work for me.

Ready to Stop Wedging a Block of Wood Behind Your Business?

If your website, marketing, or tech has been "manually secured" for a little too long, let's fix it properly.

Have a look at everything I do, browse the FAQ for straight answers on pricing and process, or just send me a message — tell me what's broken, and I'll tell you honestly what it'll take to fix it.

No jargon. No mystery packages. Just someone who opens the hood.
